Walter Cronkite dies at 92

Journalist Walter Cronkite dies at 92

By Gary Strauss and Peter Johnson, USA TODAY

From Baby Boomers to the Greatest Generation, journalist Walter Cronkite will be remembered as a voice of calm and reason whenever the nation was shocked by disaster and instability.

The Associated Press confirmed that they deep-baritone Cronkite has died at 92. In the anchor seat at CBS News With Walter Cronkite from 1962 to 1981, "Uncle Walter," as he was affectionately known by his millions of viewers, came into the USA's living room each weeknight, offering a measured presentation of the news of the day.

That coverage included many of the signature events of modern times: the Cuban missile crisis; the assassinations of John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.; the Vietnam War; the Apollo moon landing; and Watergate.

Throughout, Cronkite's comforting, authoritative style earned him iconic status as the "most trusted man in America."

"I had a pretty good seat at the parade," Cronkite once said, reflecting on the 20th century. "I was lucky enough to have been born at the right time to see most of this remarkable century."

Portly and mustachioed, Cronkite would be considered an anachronism in TV news today, a 24/7 environment marked mostly by style over substance. But journalism was in the University of Texas dropout's blood as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Times, later as a radio announcer and then for 11 years at United Press, the wire service where he eventually became a World War II correspondent covering North Africa and Europe and the post-war Nuremberg trials.

He began working for CBS' nascent TV news division in 1950, eventually anchoring the first nationally televised Democratic and Republican national conventions, and later hosting the You Are There documentary series.

"He was the personification of an era," says media critic Andrew Tyndall of tyndallreport.com. "At a time when the entire nation could only get information from a few sources, he's indelibly linked to telling us about iconic events."

Cronkite was on air for a staggering 27 of the 30 hours it took NASA to land men on the moon during the Apollo IX mission in 1969, dubbed "Walter to Walter" coverage by his peers. When astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon's surfaced, Cronkite was almost speechless for the first time in his storied career.

Cronkite earned viewers' respect for his just-the-facts style, rarely displaying much emotion on air. But there was a memorable moment in 1963, when he briefly lost his composure while announcing on live TV that President Kennedy has been shot and killed in Dallas "I choked up, I really had a little trouble...my eyes got a little wet," he said in a 2003 interview. "Fortunately, I grabbed hold before I was actually (crying)."

Cronkite's influence was such that after he ended a 1968 broadcast following a trip to South Vietnam during the Tet Offensive telling viewers that the war could not be won, President Lyndon Johnson reportedly told his aides, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America."

It was Cronkite's lifelong fascination with flight — and his unabashed enthusiasm for the U.S. space program— that may be his enduring legacy: his power as a broadcaster was such that he helped stir the public's support for space exploration. "In that age of TV," 60 Minutescreator Don Hewitt said, "Walter Cronkite was as well known as John Glenn."

He was on NASA's list to be the first journalist in space, a project scrubbed after the Challenger explosion.

"I can't imagine any red-blooded person not wanting to get into space," Cronkite told USA TODAY in 1998 before he co-anchored CNN's coverage of John Glenn's return to space at age 77. "Shaking off that idea lacks a certain imagination, a spirit of adventure. I can't think of anything better out there."

Cronkite retired in 1981, replaced by Dan Rather. Cronkite was supposed to have a continuing relationship with the network, but it didn't work out that way, and in ensuing years he smarted at the way CBS rarely invited him back on its air.

"CBS did not live up to the arrangement we had," Cronkite said. "I thought I was only stepping down from the Evening News, but I'd continue to do special events coverage and in-depth reporting. They chose not to use me. I was very unhappy the way it worked out. I kept saying, 'Maybe I could do this,' but it never quite worked out."

Yet in the next breath, Cronkite acknowledged that CBS didn't boot him out on the street, either. He maintained a large office and acknowledged that the network paid him "a magnificent amount of money" over the years, reportedly $1 million a year to do virtually nothing, which made him rich and enabled him to write, travel and found his own TV production company.

Cronkite was married for nearly sixty-five years to Betsy Maxwell, who died in March 2005. In recent years Cronkite wrote a syndicated column, contributed to The Huffington Post blog, received NASA's Ambassador of Exploration award and was the subject of a PBS documentary in 2006 and a 90th birthday party on CBS in 2007.

How did he become "the most trusted man in America?" It was a Roper survey for U.S. News & World Report, Cronkite once said, and he won "because they didn't poll my wife."

And about all this Uncle Walter stuff? "I like to think it started when I got my third chin," he said. Actually, TV was still new in the kinder, gentler '50s and '60s. Tuning into Cronkite and letting him into your home involved a certain intimacy, especially if you were sitting there in your shorts or PJs. So he became Uncle Walter, the most trusted man in America. "I felt it was a characterization of some appreciation," he said. "I couldn't object to it at all."

The man who just once gave his opinion on CBS Evening News was, in fact, very opinionated and in August 2003 began writing a syndicated column for King Features called And That's the Way I See It — a play on his CBS News signoff.

In his later years Cronkite decried the large salaries of TV news broadcasters, which he said created a journalism elite. "When you're making six- and seven-figure incomes, it's hard to understand the concerns of most Americans, no matter how good a reporter you are, Cronkite said. That included himself. "I don't do personal shopping. I don't have to stand in line. They're not, I'm not, living the frustrations of the average man."

He kept homes in Manhattan— he feuded with developer Donald Trump who successfully built a high rise next to Cronkite's apartment complex — and Edgartown, Mass., where he kept a 48-foot ketch, Wyntje, equipped with a bathtub.

But if you sat down in person with Cronkite in recent years, the anchor faded away. He was an old newspaperman at heart, who hung out in police precincts, bars and strip joints in his day, told his share of dirty jokes and still talked fondly of his 11 years at the old "UP."

Unlike today's broadcasters, who work local TV eyeing the network big leagues, Cronkite joined CBS News in 1950 because the money was better, he had a family to support and CBS' legendary Edward R. Murrow wanted him.

But he didn't stay an ordinary Joe, especially after fame and fortune attached themselves to him. Presidents and generals had chiefs of staff, and so did Walter Cronkite. Marlene Adler guarded him and his schedule for years. In recent years he had a knee replaced and wore two hearing aids.

When President Bill Clinton admitted that he had had sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky— and then went on his annual summer vacation to Martha's Vineyard with wife Hillary and daughter Chelsea— it was Cronkite who brokered a peace between the couple and took them for an afternoon sail aboard the Wyntje.

Like Clinton, Cronkite says he never inhaled.

Walter Cronkite? Pot?

"Oh sure, I tried it," Cronkite told USA TODAY. It was during those tumultuous anti-Vietnam days, when many kids and parents (the Cronkites included) disagreed on virtually everything. When kids said you can't knock it if you haven't tried it. So Cronkite got some pot from an assistant, and one night he "puffed away."

Cronkite, a longtime pipe smoker, never inhaled. It apparently didn't occur to him to do so. "Nothing happened," he said. "It wasn't any big deal."

Patients United Now

I have taken the liberty of joining this group, and if you wish to have a voice in your health care here in the US, I recommend this organization as well.

http://patientsunitednow.com

According to the site, "by joining Patients United Now, you can add your voice against a Washington takeover of your family’s health care, and support real health care choices for every American.

For many in D.C. cutting costs means CUTTING CARE----your care.

Already law: FEDERAL computer control of YOUR RECORDS and doctor by 2014. A federal board already set up whose recommendations could be used to delay or deny treatments for Medicare /Medicaid patients.

Policies Being Discussed: TAKE AWAY YOUR PRIVATE CARE and average costs over everyone----one massive Washington plan. Other countries with government health care have waiting lines and deny care based on cost, age and life expectancy.

Real reform should focus like a laser on the problems that exist, not ration care for the elderly, invade our privacy or put us into a one-size-fits-all government-controlled plan. We support the Hippocratic Oath, the doctor patient relationship and freedom."

Do we really want to wait to get care, which can be dangerous or even deadly for some? To be honest, I certainly don't.

CD Review: Turn of the Radio Age, by Buckfest Superbee

Artist: Buckfast Superbee
Title: Turn of the Radio Age
Website: http://www.buckfastsuperbee.com
Style: Indie/Rock/Alternative

Image

How can one describe the music on Buckfast Super bee’s Turn of the Radio Age outside of being one of those few CD’s that is exploding with creativity and sparkling energy?

It is the epitome of a good album that makes the effort to convey the message to stop and enjoy the beauty and art of life, and the band does it very well.

Forget about what we read and hear in the media around us; it’s time to get back to the things that are truly important, hence the overall theme of Turn of the Radio Age.

This is the perfect disc for anyone that is a big rock fan. It is a rare thoroughly thought out, well put together project filled with conceptual songs that will make the listener totally rock out.

The lyrics are innovative, the music stellar with a variety of mixes of hooks, and all twelve tracks from the album’s title song to the final “Pitch vs. Rotation” will make you stand up and really take notice—before setting the CD player on “Repeat” at least one more time!

New article on Deaf Culture

I've just been a writing fool today! I thought I would do a follow up to my hearing loss and deafness article which had gotten me a lot of great feedback and recognition.

6/15 Column: What's With THE Partner?

What is the story on THE partner? Has it been totally dropped? Are we being thrown a curve ball again? Is there a life of jobbing or something else being planned for The Brian Kendrick?

At present, with Edge being out with his current injury and subsequent recovery from surgery, the buzz seems to be going around that TBK might be one of those being considered as his replacement as the “mystery partner” at the upcoming Night of Champions.

With that in mind, who do you think will be Chris Jericho's mystery partner?

There were some indications that Dolph Ziggler could have been filling that spot, but now that an Intercontinental Championship shot against Rey Mysterio at Night of Champions, that leaves only a few possible options: a new talent from development, The Miz .…..or Kendrick.

Think about it: It’s a great opportunity to pair Jericho and Kendrick. It would certainly explain the entire ‘dropped’ story line of searching for THE partner, and looking over the other options thus far, the guy would be the best choice.

Kendrick is stellar both in and out of the ring and deserves a chance to have some gold once again, whether it would be a tag title or even given a shot at the United States Championship at some point.

Whether as a high flyer, being grounded as a technical guy, or even cutting promos, for a smaller guy, he has it all. Why not put him back in the spotlight once again as the mystery partner?

In addition, Kendrick was the longest reigning WWE Tag Champ with Paul London, so if this is the case, Jericho could give the reason of choosing Kendrick for his partner because of his tag team accomplishments.

Jericho also stated that his partner would be intelligent, devious, cunning, and honest, just like he.

TBK has also said in the past he is honest (didn’t he say once if he had a show on WWE.com it would be titled Brutally Honest? Enough said.), and we all know he has the devious and cunning side.

There are also past promos that TBK had made it clear that he is “the fastest, the most well-trained and the most intelligent wrestler in all the WWE. I have never cared and I will never care about any of you. You’re looking at the future in THE Brian Kendrick.”

Jericho is also one of TBK's idols. It would work perfectly.

But let’s face reality. We all know from past history that it would be very doubtful that WWE would take this prospect and run with it; for one, not only are cruiserweights (with the exception of the likes of Mysterio) are not taken seriously these days, but also despite the idea being somewhat popular with the fans, WWE has a history of swerving totally in another direction

If WWE doesn't make TBK the partner of Jericho, it's a hugely missed opportunity, but that is just my honest opinion. Still, this whole “mystery partner” story may make Night of Champions worth watching, TBK or otherwise.

The 120 Zipper Dress

This convertible dress design by Sebastian Errazuriz is nothing short of stunning in any of its possible stylistic configurations. The wearer can simply zip and unzip along any of the horizontal zipper lines to convert their clothing in a matter of seconds.

What might be most remarkable about this design is how quickly it can shift from elegant to sexy, a full-length, single-piece dress one could potentially wear to work into a skimpy, short-cut, two-piece number that could put some bikinis to shame. In between there are any number of other options for shortening the top or bottom or even leaving some zippers partly on and partly off.

Despite the obvious benefits in terms of variable style, temperature and so on there are some clear drawbacks to this design as well. How much cold metal can you, after all, take on your skin? And do you really want to give any passerby 120 ways to undress you in the blink of an eye? These exceptions aside the idea is incredibly innovative and has all kind of potential – if the kinks can be worked out.

Some NWA flight attendants want to wear red dress

Some NWA flight attendants want to wear red dress

Northwest flight attendants want Delta to offer bigger sizes of signature red dress uniform
By Harry R. Weber, AP Airlines Writer
On Friday July 10, 2009, 7:05 pm EDT

ATLANTA (AP) -- The union that represents flight attendants who worked for Northwest Airlines before it was bought by Delta Air Lines is crying foul over Delta's failure to offer bigger sizes for its signature red dress uniform designed by Richard Tyler.

The Northwest chapter of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA has filed a grievance with the world's largest airline operator, asking it to offer the red dress up to size 28. The union hopes the grievance will go to mediation in August.

The red dress currently is only offered up to size 18, though a Delta spokeswoman said the airline offers a range of outfits in other colors and styles up to size 28 that flight attendants can wear.

Patricia Reller, who handles grievances for the union's executive committee, said Friday that even if there was only one flight attendant who wore a size over 18, that person should be able to wear the stylish red dress.

"I think red is an eye-popping color and it's not subtle, and to me by not offering it in a size over 18, Delta is saying, 'We don't want you wearing that if you are over size 18,'" Reller said. "But the job isn't about being sexy. It's about safety."

Reller said she did not know how many pre-merger Northwest flight attendants want to wear the red dress but need a size bigger than 18.

"If the dress wasn't a tiny size 18, there would be less," Reller said. "It's a very small size 18, so that makes the numbers a lot larger."

Delta spokeswoman Gina Laughlin could not immediately say why the red dress is not available in bigger sizes while other uniform options are. But she said there have been few complaints.

"The majority of pre-merger Northwest flight attendants have given us very positive feedback about the Richard Tyler Collection," Laughlin said.

Delta hired Tyler in 2004 to do a makeover of its gray employee uniforms. Tyler, whose dresses have been worn by stars such as Julia Roberts, Heather Locklear and Jamie Lee Curtis, promised a classier -- and in some cases, sexier -- look for flight attendants, airport agents and other workers.

"I want them to look sexy and great, but you have to keep that classic look as well," Tyler told The Associated Press at the time.

The uniforms -- including white blouses and navy dresses besides the red dress -- debuted in 2006. Atlanta-based Delta acquired Northwest in October 2008. Pre-merger Northwest employees began wearing the Delta uniforms on March 30.

Delta said at the time it announced its plans for the new uniforms that the decision was a "wise investment" that would boost morale among employees and increase the airline's bottom line in the long run.

According to Delta, flight attendants must be able to perform the safety and security functions of their job, including being able to reach and close overhead bins, reach and close any of the aircraft doors and be able to sit on the aircraft jumpseat and fasten the flight attendants seatbelt.

Reller said a flight attendant who wears above a size 18 can do all of those functions well.

"The sizing of our red dress has not been an issue with Delta flight attendants since the program's inception three years ago. This is AFA hype leading up to the election," Laughlin said.

There are roughly 21,000 flight attendants at the combined airline, 14,000 from pre-merger Delta and 7,000 from pre-merger Northwest.

The Northwest workers are represented by a union, while the Delta workers are not. At some point there will be a representation election at which the combined workforce will decide whether it wants to be represented by a union or not. The two groups also must decide on how to integrate their seniority lists.

Novel Update!

Yes, after working on this thing off and on last year (with plans to have put it out before the holidays, which obviously fell through due to other commitments), I am back to work on it. I have finished both writing and editing another chapter, and working on notes for the next few.

In addition, I've also put in some requests to a couple of talented artists to make a cover for the book. Once that work has been completed, that will be yet another job out of the way; it is the manuscript itself that will take the most work.

Still, it's fun watching it unfold as I get back into it. I was able to actually write some new ideas out in a notebook I keep handy for the novel today during the power outage earlier this evening before it had started getting dark, but by then, the power was back on.

More than likely, I will be back to work on this lovely project tomorrow and perhaps sometime this week since it's going to be a light schedule and I can concentrate for a change. In between, I can take a break and write fan fic chapters if there isn't other work to be done.

20 year primate study: Calorie restriction means means longer life and better health

20 year primate study: Calorie restriction means means longer life and better health

Image

A study covering more than 20 years has confirmed in primates the claims made by calorie restriction advocates for many years: Calorie restriction leads to a longer life and better health.

The monkey to the left looks younger and healthier. His skin is tighter and his coat is in good shape. That monkey has a calorie restricted diet.

The monkey to the right consumes a regular, non-restricted diet. He looks older and shows many signs of aging. Sparse hair across the chest and sagging skin on the face and chest indicate this is a monkey of advanced years. The monkeys are roughly the same age.

Scientists have known since the 1930s that diets which maintain adequate nutrition while reducing calorie consumption greatly expanded life expectancy in mice, but the results from the University of Wisconsin - Madison are the first to publicly verify those results in primates. The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Animal Center in Poolesville, Maryland, has also been conducting a study on primate calorie restriction since 1987. Like the study at UW, all necessary nutrients are provided while reducing calorie consumption by 30%.

The NIH says that their monkeys have responded “as expected” to calorie restriction. Like rodents, skeletal development and the onset of puberty were delayed due to the calorie restriction.

Calorie Restriction Society, study, University of Wisconsin, National Institutes of Health, longer life, better healthThe Calorie Restriction Society does not recommend the use of calorie restriction in children and adolescents. People should be at least into their early 20’s following completion of physical growth and brain development before beginning a calorie restricted lifestyle.

The NIH added that “The monkeys on the restricted diet are smaller and weigh about 20 percent less than monkeys in the control group. However, the calorically restricted monkeys are no less physically active than animals allowed to eat at will.”

Science Now reports that the UW study reports are taking on new meaning because the monkeys in the study are now in their mid to late twenties, and the average life span for those primates is 27 years.

Key statistics from the study show:

* 63% of the monkeys on calorie restriction are still alive versus only 45% of the non-restricted monkeys.
* Age related deaths due to illnesses such as heart disease and cancer were 300% higher in the monkeys with an unrestricted diet.
* The monkeys with the restricted diet retained muscle mass better than the non-restricted primates.
* Gray matter deterioration in the brain was also less in the calorie restricted monkeys.
* Gray matter and muscle mass deterioration are both significant signs of aging in humans.

Since the monkeys in the trials could possibly live another 15 years or more, researchers will continue to gather data on the health ramifications of calorie restriction.

Note: Calorie Restriction logo used courtesy of the Calorie Resctriction Society.
For more info: Calorie restriction is NOT the same as starvation or anorexia. It is a carefully designed way of eating that makes sure all nutritional requirements are met while removing calorie dense foods with minimal nutrient value.

Top 10 Weight Loss Myths

Top 10 Weight Loss Myths

Author: Alex Baran

Have you sometimes felt confused about weight loss and nutrition guides that should help you take the right decisions about your health, yet for some reason they don't? Here are some of the most frequent weight loss theories, and their rebuttals.

Myth 1: If you want to lose weight, a fad diet is the best choice.

Not always true. Fad diets usually promise fast weight loss or make you cut down on certain foods. Fad diets may be unhealthy because they prevent your system from getting all its necessary nutrients. The best way to lose weight is to eat healthy and work out, according to researchers.

Myth 2: Lose weight by skipping meals.

False. If you do that, you`ll end up eating more snacks. Studies proved that people who don`t eat breakfast are heavier unlike those who eat breakfast regularly.

Myth 3: I can eat anything I want and lose weight at the same time.

This is not always true. However, some dieters may actually be able to eat whatever they want and still stay in shape. When you try to lose weight you may eat some of your favorite foods while you pay attention to the amount of your food intake.

Myth 4: Never eat after 8.00 p.m. or you`ll gain weight.

False. The most important is how much you eat and how much you exercise, not when you eat. Don`t eat snacks while watching TV, using the computer, or playing video games. You need to be aware of how much you eat, and when you're doing something else while eating, you may lose track of how much you're eating.

Myth 5: Certain foods help you burn fats.

Not really true. Certain foods that contain caffeine can enhance your metabolism for a short while. However, those foods do not result in weight loss, or make you burn fats.

Myth 6: Herbal weight loss products are efficient and safe for your health.

Not really true. Weight loss products are not necessarily safe just because they are "herbal," or "natural" . Many herbal products that claim to help you lose weight are not always scientifically tested for safety or efficiency. Certain natural products may cause negative effects along with other drugs or have unwanted effects on people with certain medical conditions.

Myth 7: Nuts should be avoided during a weight loss program.

Not always true. Some types of nuts contain saturated fats that may increase the level of cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. Other types of nuts also contain fiber, proteins, and don`t have cholesterol. They can be a part of a good weight loss program while they are consumed in small amounts.

Myth 8: Red meat is not the best choice for weight loss.

Not always true. Foods like red meat, fish, chicken, or pork contain saturated fats, cholesterol, but also protein, zinc, and iron. However, lean meat is indicated for a weight loss plan.

Myth 9: Vegetables and fresh fruits are better than frozen products.

Not always true. Both frozen and fresh fruits and vegetables are healthy. Fresh fruits can sometimes lose nutrients after light exposure.

Myth 10: Fast foods are always unhealthy.

Put Hearing Loss on the National Stage

Hearing Loss Association of America

Dear Lori,

36 million Americans have some form of hearing loss, yet only 20 percent receive the technology and services they need.

There are millions of people who need help managing their hearing loss - baby boomers dealing with hearing loss for the first time from noise exposure or other causes, veterans of two wars returning with hearing loss in record numbers, and people living longer and acquiring age-related hearing loss.

Everyday people with hearing loss are forced into early retirement, children with hearing loss are held back in school because they do not receive the support services they need, and people withdraw from life simply because they cannot afford a hearing aid. These injustices won’t stop until hearing loss and its impact is taken seriously by the general public, policy makers and the media.

President Obama and his administration committed to improving health care delivery. Now is the time for us to speak up and ask them to improve the quality and availability of hearing health care and the economic opportunity for people with hearing loss.

Take a moment to read our letter to President Obama and join us by asking for change for Americans with hearing loss.

Sincerely,
Brenda's Signature 2
